German farm mice found carrying high levels of antibiotic resistance genes

A study conducted by the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW) has revealed that wild mice living on German farms carry significant numbers of antibiotic resistance genes. By examining 875 wild house mice, researchers found an average of nearly 60 different resistance genes in their intestines, with some individuals carrying more than 100.

Out of 340 different resistance genes identified, 168 were also found in livestock such as pigs, cattle, and poultry. This suggests that antibiotic resistance is spreading through the agricultural landscape via manure, soil, and water. The findings highlight how resistance genes can move from livestock to wildlife, even in animals that have never been directly treated with antibiotics.
