University of Surrey scientists develop sublimating polymer

Researchers at the University of Surrey have developed an experimental polymer, poly(1,2-dithiolane), that exhibits unique sublimation properties. When heated to approximately 90 degrees Celsius, the material transitions directly from a solid to a gas without melting. Upon cooling, the polymer reverts to its original solid form, offering a potential breakthrough for industrial recycling and the removal of coatings.

In a separate development regarding sustainable materials, CJ Biomaterials in Massachusetts is testing biodegradable plastics. Using fermentation, microorganisms produce polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) from sugar. These plant-based polymers are designed to be consumed by bacteria in composting environments, providing an alternative to traditional plastics that persist in landfills for decades.
