University of Sydney partners with OpenAI to roll out ChatGPT Edu

The University of Sydney has entered a partnership with OpenAI to roll out ChatGPT Edu to its approximately 80,000 students and staff. The deployment will occur in phases, with staff receiving access first, followed by a student rollout planned for the first semester of 2027 after a pilot phase. To address the environmental impact of the technology, the university has established the AI Sustainability Research and Innovation Fund with an initial 1 million AUD.

This move follows a similar strategic partnership announced by the University of New South Wales (UNSW) just days prior. Together, these agreements represent some of the largest AI education deployments in the Asia-Pacific region. While the universities aim to equip graduates with critical and ethical AI skills, the rapid integration of these tools has prompted discussions regarding academic integrity and the evolving value of traditional degrees.
