University of Sydney researchers link FKBP5 gene to schizophrenia stress response
Researchers at the University of Sydney have identified that the FKBP5 gene, which regulates the body's response to stress, is more easily activated in individuals with schizophrenia. According to a study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, the absence of chemical marks that normally control this gene leads to its overexpression.
This genetic overactivity can result in an intensified stress response, similar to a speaker's volume being stuck at a high level. This persistent elevation in stress response may make brain circuits, particularly in the frontal cortex, more vulnerable to damage as a person ages. Such damage can impact areas responsible for memory, decision-making, and emotional regulation, potentially increasing susceptibility to severe psychiatric disorders in adulthood.
Natalie Matosin, a researcher at the University of Sydney, noted that understanding these mechanisms provides new insights for developing more effective therapeutic strategies to regulate stress responses in those suffering from schizophrenia.
