Staff at the University of Sydney have commenced a 24-hour strike following a deadlock in enterprise bargaining negotiations. Led by the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU), hundreds of employees are protesting over job security, casual employment, and the integration of artificial intelligence in higher education. The union is demanding legally binding protections to ensure AI is not used to reduce staff-student contact hours, replace human teaching, or replicate staff voices and images. The university has advised students and staff to work from home, with most classes moving online to minimize disruption.

Separately, the University of Queensland (UQ) has entered an enforceable undertaking with the Fair Work Ombudsman following an $11 million wage underpayment scandal. The systemic error, occurring between 2017 and 2026, affected approximately 16,400 current and former academic and professional staff. The underpayments, which included unpaid wages, superannuation, and interest, resulted in an average loss of $564 per employee. UQ has already repaid over $9.6 million to a significant portion of those affected.
