University of Sydney study warns of smart glasses privacy risks

A study from the University of Sydney has highlighted growing privacy risks and digital harassment associated with the use of smart glasses. Researchers identified a phenomenon termed ‘environmental recording,’ where individuals use wearable devices that are visually indistinguishable from standard eyewear to secretly record women in public or semi-public spaces, such as workplaces, gyms, and beaches.

By analyzing hundreds of Instagram videos posted between 2023 and 2026, the research team found that certain communities use these devices to capture footage of women without their consent. The recorded content is often shared online for entertainment or social validation. Postdoctoral researcher Dr. Milica Stilinovic noted that the rapid pace of technological development is currently outstripping the ability of regulatory bodies to establish necessary legal frameworks, suggesting that tech giants may need to slow the release of such devices to allow for adequate oversight.
