University of Szczecin awards honorary doctorate to physicist Paul Davies
The University of Szczecin has awarded the title of doctor honoris causa to Professor Paul Charles William Davies, a prominent quantum physicist, cosmologist, and science popularizer from Arizona State University.
Professor Davies is recognized for his significant contributions to physical sciences, particularly the development of quantum field theory in curved spacetime. His diverse research interests span the origins of the universe, the nature of time and consciousness, and even speculative topics such as time travel and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Additionally, he has conducted research into the biological nature of cancer, utilizing a $9 million grant from the American Cancer Society to lead the Center for the Convergence of Physical Science and Cancer Biology at ASU.
In his acceptance, Professor Davies noted that being recognized for his life's work was more satisfying than individual career successes. He has long supported the Szczecin Cosmological Group, an international research team within the University of Szczecin's Institute of Physics. He is also a recipient of the prestigious Templeton Prize.
