University of Tampa mandates generative AI literacy course

The University of Tampa has implemented a new mandatory one-credit generative artificial intelligence literacy course for all sophomores, effective this fall semester. The course replaces a previous requirement for a basic computer coding class focused on Python.

Developed in partnership with the online learning platform Codio, the curriculum focuses on developing critical judgment rather than serving as a technical tutorial. Key topics include evaluating AI-generated outputs for accuracy, understanding privacy concerns, and using AI responsibly as a thinking partner. The course aims to equip students with the skills to navigate the fast-changing technology and facilitate better communication with faculty regarding AI use in specific assignments.

Because the university currently lacks a campus-wide AI policy, the course is designed to help students approach professors to clarify expectations for individual tasks. The shift comes as employers increasingly seek recruits who are adept at utilizing AI tools.
