University of Texas researchers develop wearable ultrasound patch for REM sleep
Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have developed NEUSLeeP, an experimental wearable bioelectronic patch designed to target and enhance REM sleep. The device utilizes low-intensity focused ultrasound directed at the subthalamic nucleus, combined with integrated electrophysiological sensors to monitor brain activity in real time.
In a study involving 28 participants, the device helped users reach REM sleep an average of 43 minutes earlier and extended the duration of that sleep stage by approximately 16 minutes compared to sham treatments. The technology offers a non-invasive alternative to medication or surgery for addressing disrupted sleep patterns, which are often linked to depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Functional MRI measurements indicated changes in brain circuits associated with emotional processing, and participants reported the 103-gram device was comfortable for overnight use with minimal adverse effects. While the initial results are promising, researchers noted that larger clinical trials are required to confirm long-term safety and effectiveness for treating clinical sleep disorders.
