University of the Aegean proposes transport solutions for Chios

The University of the Aegean has presented three scientific scenarios to address connectivity issues on Chios during the planned four-month closure of Homer State Airport, scheduled from November 15, 2026, to March 15, 2027.

Following a meeting convened by Rector Stylianos Xanthopoulos with maritime authorities, regional representatives, and local municipalities, the university's Department of Maritime and Business Services proposed the following options:

1. Daily ferry connections to Piraeus by adding a seventh weekly service to the existing Piraeus–Chios–Mytilene line. 2. Faster maritime links via Mesta, involving a new high-speed ferry service from Piraeus or Lavrio to Mesta port three times a week, supplemented by organized bus transfers to Chios town. 3. Combined transport via Mytilene, featuring two daily high-speed ferry trips between Mytilene and Chios, coordinated with flights and bus connections between Odysseas Elytis Airport and the port.

The study includes costed estimates regarding vessel types, operational speeds, fuel consumption, and total travel times.
