University of the Aegean students face severe housing shortage
Students at the University of the Aegean are facing a severe housing crisis across the Aegean islands. Student representatives report that 244 students who meet the necessary social and economic criteria for housing have been denied dormitory rooms due to a lack of availability. This shortage includes 98 first-year students.
Across the university's various departments, only 594 rooms are available to serve thousands of students. In Mytilene, for example, there are 623 first-year students but only 136 available dormitory spots. In other locations such as Rhodes, Lemnos, and Syros, housing needs are met through the rental of hotel rooms rather than dedicated student residences.
The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) has submitted a parliamentary question regarding the issue, highlighting the economic pressure on families caused by high rents and expensive travel costs between the islands. Students have announced protests and are calling for immediate measures, such as the rental of additional rooms, to ensure all eligible students have access to housing.
