University of the Balearic Islands drops out of Shanghai Ranking
The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) has dropped out of the top 1,000 universities in the Shanghai Ranking, falling 500 positions over the last seven years. In 2026 alone, the institution saw a decline of 200 positions, placing it among the lower-ranked universities in Spain alongside institutions in Cantabria and La Rioja.
The Shanghai Ranking evaluates institutions based on several key indicators, including Nobel and Fields Medal winners, research output in journals like Nature and Science, and citations. While the UIB leadership has suggested the ranking may favor large American campuses and the rise of Chinese universities, the decline reflects a significant loss in academic standing.
The ranking methodology places heavy weight on research results, specifically articles published in the Science Citation Index Expanded and the Social Sciences Citation Index, as well as the number of highly cited researchers.
