University of The Gambia students protest over campus services
Hundreds of students at the University of The Gambia (UTG) held protests to voice grievances regarding transportation, campus facilities, and student welfare. The Students’ Union reported that these issues affect more than 12,000 students, many of whom rely on university buses to reach the Faraba Banta campus.
In addition to transportation difficulties, students cited limited access to safe drinking water, affordable food, and unreliable internet connectivity. While lectures have resumed following government promises to improve services, students are also demanding the resignations of Vice Chancellor Herbert Robinson and the director of student affairs, accusing them of failing to perform their duties.
In response to the unrest, Higher Education Minister Professor Pierre Gomez visited the campus. The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology announced that the Gambia Transport Service Company has deployed 20 buses to assist with student transportation.
