University of the State of Mexico Approves Historic Reform to Its Law

The University Autonomous of the State of Mexico (UAEMéx) unanimously approved a draft reform to its university law during an extraordinary council session. The reform aims to modernize the institution’s legal framework, strengthen autonomy, and introduce a universal, direct, secret ballot for electing the rector and other senior academic officials. It also commits to a gradual move toward tuition‑free education and expands scholarship funding, allocating 5.5 million pesos to grant approximately 2,000‑peso scholarships.

The council also authorized the transformation of the Cuautitlán Izcalli Professional Academic Unit into a full university centre, expanding the university’s regional presence. The approved draft will be forwarded to the state executive for presentation to the LXIII Legislature of the State of Mexico, where it must be debated and ratified before taking effect.
