University of Thessaly professor clarifies definition of Lifestyle Medicine

Dr. Georgios K. Sakkas, a professor at the University of Thessaly, has clarified the definition and scope of Lifestyle Medicine following public debate. He emphasizes that Lifestyle Medicine is a modern, evidence-based clinical field and is not a form of alternative, quantum, energy, or shamanic medicine.

According to Dr. Sakkas, the discipline does not involve unsubstantiated interventions and does not oppose conventional medicine. It is not intended to replace emergency care, pharmaceutical treatments, surgical procedures, or any treatment mandated by clinical guidelines. Instead, it works alongside standard medical care through multidisciplinary cooperation.

The field utilizes scientifically verified interventions in areas such as nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, sexual health, the avoidance of harmful substances, the promotion of healthy social relationships, and the impact of the environment on health. The primary goals are prevention, improved management, and, where supported by sufficient scientific data, the remission or slowing of chronic diseases.
