University of Thessaly professor discusses the role of biomass in renewable energy

Nikos Danalatos, a professor of Agriculture and Plant Ecology at the University of Thessaly, has provided scientific insights regarding the role of biofuels and renewable energy sources. He notes that while many believe solar and wind power are the primary renewable energy sources, they actually account for only 13% and 17% of renewable energy in Europe, respectively.

Danalatos highlights that biomass is the leading renewable energy source in Europe, representing 50% of the total, followed by hydroelectric power at 12%. He defines biomass as any organic raw material used to produce solid, liquid, or gaseous biofuels, including agricultural and urban residues such as straw, sawdust, and organic waste.

In Europe, approximately 74% of biomass is derived from wood residues and energy crops, while 26% comes from organic waste. The professor emphasizes that renewable energy is an essential path for both Greece and the global community in the 21st century.
