University of Tokyo expert warns against extreme fasting for weight loss
Professor Emeritus Ishuura Shoichi of the University of Tokyo warns that extreme fasting and severe calorie restriction can be counterproductive for long-term weight management. While these methods may lead to rapid initial weight loss, they often result in significant muscle loss before fat reduction occurs. This loss of muscle mass can weaken the body and make it increasingly difficult to maintain weight in the long term.
To achieve sustainable results, experts recommend building a balanced, long-term dietary plan rather than relying on starvation. Key strategies include limiting sugar intake, increasing consumption of green vegetables and fruits, and reducing high-fat foods. Additionally, regular physical activity, such as swimming, is suggested to support the process. Avoiding overly monotonous or restrictive diets is also crucial to prevent the psychological fatigue that often leads to failure in weight loss efforts.
