University of Tokyo selects first female president

The University of Tokyo has selected Professor Yuko Fujigaki as its next president, making her the first woman to lead the institution since its founding in 1877. Fujigaki, a specialist in science and technology studies, is scheduled to begin her six-year term in April 2027, succeeding Teruo Fujii.

The decision has sparked significant controversy due to the selection process. In a faculty and staff preference vote, Fujigaki placed second, receiving 553 votes, while Vice President Takao Someya received 1,107 votes. However, the university’s selection and inspection committee ultimately chose Fujigaki, citing her ability to realize transformations toward a more open university.

Critics, including lawyer Masaki Kito, have questioned the decision, suggesting that bypassing the top vote-getter may undermine democratic principles within the organization. Social media discussions have also highlighted debates regarding research output disparities and the influence of diversity initiatives on academic leadership.
