University of Toledo study links red blood cell behavior to liver stress

Researchers at the University of Toledo have identified a potential new indicator of liver stress through the behavior of red blood cells. According to a study published in the American Journal of Physiology–Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, high concentrations of bile acids can alter red blood cells, making them more resistant to breaking apart.

Bile acids are substances produced by the liver to aid in digestion and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. When these acids accumulate in the bloodstream rather than the intestines, they may affect circulating red blood cells. While the research is in its early stages and requires larger studies to determine clinical utility, the findings suggest that red blood cell behavior could eventually serve as an early detection method for liver stress before more obvious symptoms appear.
