QS 2027 World University Rankings show Hong Kong rise, Toronto drop, Philippine declines

The QS World University Rankings 2027 placed the University of Hong Kong at 11th and the Chinese University of Hong Kong at 18th, marking the first time two Hong Kong institutions entered the global top‑20. Five Hong Kong universities are now in the top 100, and the government highlighted a US$1.5 billion research matching grant and expanded quotas for non‑local students to strengthen its education hub status.

In Canada, the University of Toronto fell from 29th to 32nd place, continuing a multi‑year slide, while McGill University rose to 27th and becomes the highest‑ranked Canadian university. Other Canadian schools such as UBC and the University of Alberta also featured lower in the list.

The Philippines saw all five of its universities remain in the QS 2027 rankings, but four slipped further. The University of the Philippines dropped 40 places to 402nd, Ateneo de Manila fell to 581st, and University of Santo Tomas slipped into the 951‑1000 band. Only De La Salle University improved, moving to 654th. The Philippines did not make the list of the most‑improved higher‑education systems.
