University of Trier hosts symposium on the Riace Bronzes

The University of Trier held an Italian-German symposium titled “I Bronzi di Riace: nuove prospettive tra mito e realtà” (The Riace Bronzes: new perspectives between myth and reality) on Friday, October 23. Held at the university’s Center for Italian Studies, the interdisciplinary event brought together experts in archaeology, classical philology, archaeometallurgy, and education.

Speakers addressed the statues from various academic angles. Professor Diego De Brasi discussed Plato and the ideal of kalokagathia, while Dr. Davide Bagnardi from the University for Foreigners of Perugia examined the relationship between the ancient statues and their influence on modern popular culture. Additionally, Professor Wolf-Rüdiger Teegen from the University of Munich presented research on archaeometallurgy, demonstrating how the study of metals and fusion processes can contribute to historical knowledge.
