Japan study finds people can accurately estimate life expectancy
A 28-year longitudinal study led by sociologist Shohei Okamoto from the University of Tsukuba has found that individuals can estimate their own life expectancy with surprising accuracy. The research analyzed data from the Aging and Health Dynamics Study, a nationally representative survey of adults aged 60 and older in Japan.
Starting in 1996, 2,054 participants provided estimates of the age they expected to reach. Over the following nearly three decades, researchers tracked mortality through official records and family reports. The findings revealed a significant correlation between personal life expectancy expectations and actual longevity; those who anticipated living longer generally did so. This relationship remained consistent even after adjusting for age, gender, socioeconomic status, and general health factors.
Notably, the study also identified a trend where many participants underestimated their remaining lifespan. Approximately 59 percent of the group lived longer than they had originally predicted.
