University of Utah to close Sandy Center campus in 2027

The University of Utah has announced it will close its Sandy Center satellite campus on January 1, 2027. The decision follows a state directive, HB 265, which requires Utah’s eight public degree-granting colleges to collectively reallocate $60 million toward high-demand workforce fields such as nursing, engineering, and artificial intelligence.

The University of Utah is responsible for reallocating approximately $19.6 million of that total. Officials stated that closing the Sandy location, which primarily offers general education courses available at the main campus or online, will reduce facility and administrative costs.

Approximately 660 students are currently enrolled at the Sandy Center. Fall classes will proceed as scheduled, and the university has stated it will work with students to help them transition to other educational options for the spring semester. Most students currently enrolled at the Sandy location also utilize online courses or the main Salt Lake City campus.
