University of Victoria hosts Indonesian street art exhibition

The UVic Legacy Art Gallery in downtown Victoria is hosting ‘Wara-Wara’, an exhibition featuring 21 artists and four collectives from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The title is derived from the Javanese term for an announcement, warning, or public call.

Developed through a collaboration between Survive! Garage, the University of Victoria, and various participating artists, the exhibition explores how artistic practices respond to social, political, and environmental uncertainty. The collection includes paintings, drawings, prints, and site-responsive works, alongside photographic and video documentation of the project’s origins in Yogyakarta.

Organized in part by Richard Fox of the University of Victoria, the project highlights the shared practices that sustain artistic communities. The exhibition runs from September 16 to December 5 at 630 Yates St., with a public event scheduled for September 15 at the UVic Critical Humanities Commons.
