University of Victoria introduces courses on Heated Rivalry

The University of Victoria (UVic) is introducing two new courses this fall centered on the Heated Rivalry phenomenon, a series about rival hockey players that has transitioned from novels to television.

In the Faculty of Law, Gillian Calder will teach Law 357: Queering Law. This seminar will use the series to examine the intersection of law with gender identity, sports, race, ability, colonialism, and masculinity, focusing on legal issues affecting queer individuals in Canada.

In the English department, Janice Niemann will lead English 321: Authors on Screen: Rachel Reid’s Heated Rivalry. This course will analyze the transition of the story from book to screen, utilizing theoretical frameworks such as genre theory, critical race theory, and queer theory, while also exploring fan fiction.
