University of Victoria launches pop-up drug checking service

The University of Victoria has introduced its first pop-up drug checking service to support students returning to campus. Hosted by Doctors for Safer Drug Policy, the initiative provides free, legal, and confidential substance testing to help students identify the contents of illicit drugs and mitigate risks associated with the toxic drug supply.

Dr. Jill Wiwcharuk of Doctors for Safer Drug Policy noted that the 19 to 29 age demographic has accounted for 15 per cent of all drug deaths since the public health emergency began in 2016. The service is located near the Student Union Building and includes access to physicians for discussions regarding safe drug use.

The University of Victoria Students' Society (UVSS) supports the pop-up but is actively campaigning for a permanent drug-checking site on campus. The push for permanent services follows a 2024 letter sent to the university and the province after the death of an 18-year-old student in university housing.
