University of Vienna maps hidden structures in Orion Nebula
An international research team led by Juan Diego Soler at the Institute for Astrophysics, University of Vienna, produced the highest‑resolution map of neutral atomic hydrogen in the Orion Nebula. By combining observations from two of the world’s most powerful radio telescopes in the United States and China, the team revealed a second expanding cavity inside the main shell and a long gas protrusion extending about four light‑years beyond the nebula’s outer boundary. The findings, published in *Astronomy & Astrophysics*, are part of the NeAtHood project, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), and aim to improve understanding of how atomic hydrogen clouds condense into stars and planets.
The new hydrogen maps show a complex structure of bubbles and outflows that challenges previous mass estimates for the nebula. Researchers suggest that the Orion Nebula’s formation involves multiple interacting events rather than a single source, offering fresh insights into massive star‑formation processes in our galaxy.
