University of Vienna physicists operate first quantum processor in orbit
Physicists from the University of Vienna, led by Philip Walther, have successfully operated a quantum processor in orbit for the first time. The device, a photonic quantum processor that encodes information using light-based qubits on a glass chip, was launched via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket to a low Earth orbit of approximately 510 kilometers on June 23, 2025.
Despite facing critical technical challenges—including mechanical stress during launch, solar interference, radiation, and thermal fluctuations—the team demonstrated essential quantum effects. This achievement suggests that quantum computing could eventually be used to process massive amounts of raw data directly on satellites.
Currently, satellites face significant bandwidth bottlenecks when attempting to transmit the vast quantities of atmospheric, climatic, and photographic data they collect to Earth. While some satellites use AI chips for onboard processing, quantum computing offers the potential for vastly increased computational power to resolve these information bottlenecks by sending only processed results back to ground stations.
