University of Vienna researchers operate first quantum computer in space

Physicists from the University of Vienna have successfully operated a quantum computer in space for the first time. Led by Philip Walther, the research team utilized a satellite to demonstrate that quantum processing can occur in orbit, potentially solving the bandwidth limitations currently faced when transmitting raw data from satellites to Earth-based stations.

To protect the highly sensitive quantum processor from the extreme conditions of space, such as temperature fluctuations, electromagnetic interference, and intense vibrations during launch, the researchers implemented several engineering solutions. The device uses photons to carry information through a programmable optical network. To withstand mechanical stress, sensitive components were mounted on titanium baseplates, and optical fibers were secured with specialized epoxy resin.

Pre-launch testing revealed the extreme difficulty of the environment, with components subjected to vibrations reaching 1500 times Earth's gravitational acceleration. The unit was launched into orbit via SpaceX in June 2025.
