University of Warwick researchers challenge 40-year superconductor theory

Researchers at the University of Warwick have discovered that cuprate superconductors, a class of copper-based materials, possess a complex patchwork of different atomic arrangements rather than the uniform crystal structure assumed for the last 40 years.

Using advanced scanning 3D X-ray diffraction—a technique similar to a medical CT scan but for atomic structures—the team revealed that these materials contain distinct regions separated by transition zones hundreds of times wider than previously believed. These wide boundaries may potentially act against superconductivity.

The study, published in Physical Review Letters, was conducted in collaboration with the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in France. The research utilized high-intensity X-ray beams made possible by a recent 150 million euro upgrade at the ESRF to map the deep interior structures of the crystals.
