University of Warwick researchers find structural flaws in cuprate superconductors

Researchers from the University of Warwick and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility have challenged a 40-year scientific assumption regarding the uniformity of cuprate superconductors. Using advanced scanning 3D X-ray diffraction, the team discovered that these copper-based materials, previously thought to be homogeneous, actually consist of a patchwork of distinct crystal structures.

The study revealed that the material is divided into regions with different atomic arrangements, separated by unusually wide domain walls approximately 150 nanometers wide. These structural boundaries may hinder superconductivity by altering electron behavior.

Understanding this internal heterogeneity is critical for the future development of high-performance components for electrical grids, medical scanners, and quantum computing hardware, as it necessitates new theoretical models to replace existing bulk measurements.
