University of Washington researchers develop fentanyl vaccine

Researchers at the University of Washington are developing a vaccine designed to prevent fentanyl overdoses by training the immune system to intercept the drug before it reaches the brain. Because fentanyl molecules are too small for the immune system to recognize naturally, scientists created a “copycat molecule” attached to a larger protein. This process prompts the body to produce antibodies that latch onto fentanyl, creating a bundle too large to cross the blood-brain barrier.

Preliminary studies in laboratory animals suggest these antibodies may reduce cravings and dependency, with indications that the effects could last up to a year. While not a universal cure for addiction, the researchers plan to request human trials from the Food and Drug Administration. Other vaccines, including one for oxycodone, are also in development.
