University of Western Macedonia awards honorary doctorate to Dr. Ghassan Khalil

The University of Western Macedonia has awarded an honorary doctorate to Dr. Ghassan Khalil, an academic and former UNICEF Diplomatic Representative in Greece. The ceremony took place on October 21, 2026, at the ZEP campus in Kozani, within the Department of Communication and Digital Media.

The event was held as part of the 3rd Network Meeting of Child Rights Centers, hosted by the university in collaboration with UNICEF. Dr. Khalil is recognized as the inspiration behind the 2020 initiative to establish Child Rights Centers within Greek universities, a network that includes the University of Western Macedonia.

Professor Eleni Griva, Vice Rector for Outreach and Holistic Care, stated that the honor recognizes Khalil’s long-standing international contributions to human rights, specifically child rights, and highlights the connection between education, social justice, and institutional cooperation.
