University of Western Macedonia to develop €43M AI supercomputer
The University of Western Macedonia is advancing plans for a new €43 million Artificial Intelligence supercomputer in Kozani. The project, part of the Just Transition Fund, aims to integrate the region into the European high-performance computing landscape and transform the local economic model through research and innovation.
Approval for the project is expected by September 2026, with a target operational date by the end of 2027. The infrastructure will be housed in a new Green Data Center and will include a 2MW photovoltaic park to provide energy coverage. Tenders for the building facilities, the solar park, and the supercomputer itself are scheduled to be published between October and late December.
This development follows the completion of the ‘Daedalus’ supercomputer project by the National Technological Infrastructure Network (GRNET), which is expected to be fully operational by the end of September. With the addition of the new AI-optimized system, Greece aims to strengthen its position among the top 14 countries possessing national high-performance computing systems.
