University of Wisconsin-Madison study links protein reduction to longevity

A meta-analysis of over 350 studies conducted by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison suggests that reducing protein intake may promote longevity and metabolic health. While high protein consumption is beneficial for athletes and muscle development, the study indicates that for the general sedentary population, excessive intake may not be necessary and could have negative health implications.

In animal models, protein restriction has been linked to a lifespan increase of up to 40%. Key biological mechanisms identified include the activation of the hormone FGF21, which aids energy expenditure, the stimulation of autophagy (a cellular cleaning process), and the inhibition of mTORC1.

Preliminary human studies also show promising results, including improved insulin sensitivity, reduced fasting blood sugar, and decreased body fat even when caloric intake remains stable. However, researchers note that dietary adjustments should be approached with caution, particularly for individuals over the age of 65.
