University of Wollongong receives $1.5m for Parkinson's research

The Parkinson's Research Foundation (PRF) has donated $1.5 million to the University of Wollongong (UOW) to fund advanced research equipment at the Molecular Horizons institute. The donation provides an Opera Phenix automated cellular imaging system and a JANUS Automated Workstation.

This technology allows neuroscientists to analyze massive volumes of cell samples at a much higher speed and scale than previous methods. Professor Lezanne Ooi, a neuroscientist and deputy director of Molecular Horizons, noted that the equipment enables researchers to examine hundreds of thousands or even millions of cells across various conditions, comparing it to the difference between a “charcoal drawing” and a “high-resolution video.”

The investment aims to accelerate research into the diagnosis, treatment, and potential cure of Parkinson's disease. PRF, established in 2024 by Michael Katz and Dr. Richard Balanson, focuses on philanthropic investments designed to remove bottlenecks in high-potential medical research.
