University of Wuppertal study links adolescent loneliness to personality

A study led by psychologist Cara Luisa Wicher at the University of Wuppertal has investigated how personality traits and social contexts influence loneliness in adolescents. Published in Development and Psychopathology, the research highlights that while being alone is linked to momentary feelings of isolation, certain maladaptive personality traits can lead to chronic loneliness regardless of social surroundings.

To minimize memory bias, researchers utilized ecological momentary assessment (EMA), collecting over 27,000 data points via smartphone notifications sent to participants multiple times a day over a 14-day period. The findings suggest that adolescents react differently to social situations based on traits such as detachment and high negative affect. This indicates that the quality of social connections and daily emotional dynamics are more significant factors than the mere frequency of social contact.
