University of York students protest rising costs and service cuts

Student activists at the University of York are campaigning against rising costs and declining services during the university's orientation period. Members of Socialist Students report that Halifax College, which houses over 1,000 students, has seen a reduction in essential amenities, including the loss of a local shop, reception, and a nearby bus stop.

Protesters highlighted significant increases in accommodation costs, noting that rent for certain student housing rose from £99 to over £150 per week. They also pointed to a broader trend where affordable accommodation at the university has decreased from 47% to 15% within a single year.

Similar concerns regarding the cost of living and future economic stability were reported among students at Sheffield Hallam University.
