University of Zagreb opens renovated Biology Department building
The renovated Biology Department building of the Faculty of Science (PMF) at the University of Zagreb has officially reopened following a comprehensive restoration project costing nearly 25 million euros. The project, which included approximately 19 million euros for construction works, was funded by the EU Solidarity Fund, the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, and the state budget.
Originally built in 1898, the complex consists of a main building and two courtyard wings. The renovation aimed to preserve the historical value of the 130-year-old structure while improving seismic resistance, energy efficiency, and accessibility. Key structural upgrades included carbon fiber wall reinforcement, the installation of reinforced concrete slabs and staircases, and steel supporting structures.
The redesigned layout allocates the main building primarily for teaching, while the courtyard buildings house laboratories, faculty offices, and animal breeding facilities for research. While teaching has already resumed, officials noted that additional furniture and equipment are still required for full functionality. This project is part of a larger initiative by the University of Zagreb to renovate 42 buildings following the 2020 earthquake.
