University of Zurich and Fraunhofer IGD develop automated forensic imaging platform

Fraunhofer IGD and the University of Zurich are collaborating on the ICON VirtoFusion research project to automate the integration of forensic imaging data. Currently, forensic data is often collected using various systems and merged manually, which can impact the reproducibility and traceability of findings.

The new platform aims to automatically capture, calibrate, spatially assign, and evaluate multiple imaging modalities. This includes post-mortem computed tomography (CT), color-calibrated optical 3D surface documentation, and multispectral imaging. By combining these methods, the system intends to systematically check for consistency between internal and external findings and make uncertainties visible.

Led by Prof. Dr. Michael Thali at the University of Zurich's Virtopsy Research Lab, the project seeks to establish a foundation for forensic documentation that is both reproducible and legally defensible in court. Dominic Gascho is responsible for key work regarding the validation of multimodal registration and data correlation.
