University sports updates in British Columbia

The Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners volleyball teams are preparing for the 2026/27 season with goals to reclaim provincial and national titles. Following a successful 2025/26 campaign where the women’s team won the Pacific Western Athletic Association title and a CCAA bronze medal, the program faces roster changes due to senior graduations and a season-ending ACL injury to middle player Alannah Wright. Coach Shane Hyde noted that players like Maya Lees and Kadence Bolen are prepared to take on increased roles.

In rugby, the UVic Vikes are hosting the Canada West Rugby 15s championship at Wallace Field. The undefeated Vikes, who finished the regular season 5-0 and are ranked fourth nationally, will face the Alberta Pandas in the semifinals. The tournament also features the UBC Thunderbirds and the Lethbridge Pronghorns, with the championship match scheduled for October 25.
