University staff and educators hold protests in Yemen and Morocco

Protests have erupted at Hadramaut University in Yemen, organized by the Southern Transitional Council coordination for the university. Academics, administrators, and students held a peaceful demonstration to demand improved living and academic conditions. Key demands include restructuring wages to match current living costs, completing pending academic and administrative settlements, and finalizing the status of contract workers.

Participants also called for relief regarding student financial burdens, specifically rising transportation costs and the need for standardized university fees. The protest highlighted broader regional issues in Hadramaut, such as shortages in fuel, gas, electricity, and water, which impact the educational environment. Additionally, the group condemned recent reported crackdowns and arrests of peaceful demonstrators in Mukalla.

In Morocco, the National Union of Education (UMT) held a regional protest in Taza against the provincial directorate of national education. The union criticized what it described as administrative mismanagement, corruption, and the disregard for workers' rights. Specific grievances include delays in promotions, issues regarding the rights of staff hired under contract systems since 2016, and administrative hurdles in processing salary transfers and allowances.
