University student governments discuss infrastructure and expansion plans

The University of Massachusetts Student Government Association is preparing for potential infrastructure improvements under the proposed BRIGHT Act. If the act is reconciled by the Massachusetts legislature and signed by Governor Maura Healey, it would provide $2.5 billion in capital infrastructure funding to Massachusetts universities over ten years. The UMass system is projected to receive $1.25 billion, with UMass Amherst seeking approximately $500 million to $700 million to address deferred maintenance and reduce carbon emissions.

Proposed projects for UMass Amherst include the demolition of Bartlett and Machmer Halls to construct a new classroom building, energy improvements to the Fine Arts Center, Whitmore Administration Building, and Herter Hall, and the construction of a new visitor center.

At Stanford University, the Undergraduate Senate passed a bill to increase transparency and communication with students. During discussions, senators addressed the StanfordNext proposal, a long-term expansion plan submitted to Santa Clara County. The proposal seeks to add 1.8 million square feet of academic space and 2,500 student beds over two decades, alongside a $100 million community fund for regional affordable housing. Concerns were raised regarding the impact of such large-scale expansion on local transportation and housing access.
