University students and faculty discuss midterm election outlooks
University communities at the University of Massachusetts and the University of Maine are evaluating voter engagement and potential outcomes ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
A survey of University of Massachusetts students indicates high levels of voter registration, with 85% of respondents stating they are registered. Among those registered, 86% expressed an intention to vote in the upcoming midterms. The survey noted that sophomores showed the highest intent to vote at 95%, while freshmen reported the lowest at 80%. Many students indicated a preference for voting via mail or absentee ballots.
At the University of Maine, faculty and students are focusing on the closely watched U.S. Senate race between incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins and Democratic challenger Troy Jackson. Political science professor Robert Glover noted that Maine voters often favor pragmatic discourse and may attempt to tune out heavy advertising from out-of-state entities. Glover suggested that because much of the electorate may have already decided on a candidate, the election outcome will likely depend heavily on voter turnout.
