University students face rising theft of bicycles and electronics

Bicycle and personal property thefts are surging in university towns, particularly during the start of academic terms. Data from insurer Aviva indicates that laptops, mobile phones, and bicycles are the most frequently targeted items in student insurance claims, often stolen from residences, public transport, and hospitality venues.

Experts warn that many students are vulnerable due to inadequate security measures, such as using cheap cable locks that can be easily cut. James Brown of BikeRegister noted spikes in theft reports during freshers’ week. To mitigate risk, security organizations like Sold Secure recommend investing in higher-rated hardware, such as gold-rated locks, which are more resistant to tools like angle grinders.

Regarding insurance, the Association of British Insurers suggests students check if they are already covered under parental policies or student residence plans before purchasing new contents insurance. One in five insurance claims involving student possessions is directly related to bicycles.
