University students launch climate resilience project for Van and Erçek lakes

University students from Genç TEMA communities in Van and Ardahan have initiated a joint field study to combat climate change and protect water resources. Led by Van Yüzüncü Yıl University (YYÜ), the “Van and Erçek Lakes Climate Resilience and Youth Field Academy Project” was approved under the University Student Communities Cooperation and Support Program (ÜNİDES) by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The project is linked to the Turkey process for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31). During field operations, students and academics collected water samples from six stations across Van and Erçek lakes, which serve as habitats for various bird species, including flamingos.

The collected samples will undergo laboratory analysis to determine the current state of the lakes. Findings will be compiled into a report and shared with the Van Governor's Office, Van YYÜ Rectorate, Van Metropolitan Municipality, and various non-governmental organizations to promote sustainability and environmental awareness.
