University study evaluates forestry felling tools in Austria

A master's thesis from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, evaluates the productivity and ergonomics of technical aids used in tree felling. The study focuses on reducing physical strain and increasing safety for forestry workers in Austria, where chainsaw felling remains dominant due to steep terrain and small forest holdings.

The research compared two specific tools: the TR30 AQ mechanical felling wedge by Forstreich GmbH and the Nordforest Armstrong hydraulic felling lifter by Grube-Forst GmbH. Data was collected during a study involving the felling of 46 deciduous trees, using terrestrial laser scanning and heart rate monitoring to assess physical exertion and performance limits.
