University systems in Minnesota and Maine face budget shortfalls
Higher education institutions in Minnesota and Maine are facing significant financial challenges, leading to proposed budget cuts, restructuring, and potential layoffs.
In Minnesota, the University of Minnesota has announced $252 million in budget cuts and a 3.8% increase in in-state tuition. The Minnesota State system is also navigating a $30 million funding gap, which officials warn could lead to campus closures and restructuring. Leaders attribute these pressures to changes in state and federal funding alongside rising inflation. While enrollment has increased at some locations, such as the University of Minnesota Rochester, institutions face limits on how much they can raise tuition to remain competitive.
In Maine, the University of Maine and the University of Maine at Machias have reported a $19 million budget shortfall for the 2027-28 fiscal year. Approximately $5.7 million of this gap may necessitate layoffs and retrenchments. Union leaders have responded by calling for increased administrative transparency, arguing that leadership should review its own spending before placing the financial burden on faculty and staff. Critics warn that proposed cuts to academic affairs and early-career positions could fundamentally alter the university system’s educational capacity.
