Unmanned 24-hour retail stores expand across Japan

Unmanned, 24-hour retail stores are increasing in popularity across Japan, offering diverse products ranging from second-hand clothing to student-led local goods.

In Toyonaka, Osaka, the unmanned vintage clothing store TreDoro opened in May 2026. The shop offers a flat rate of 1,000 yen for all items, including brands, vintage pieces, and accessories. The owner, who runs an estate liquidation business, established the shop to prevent usable clothing from being discarded during estate cleanups, promoting a circular economy.

In Toyama Prefecture, similar trends are emerging. Mujifuru, an unmanned clothing shop in Takaoka, sells items priced between 500 and 3,000 yen. Meanwhile, in Himi, Himiko Bridge operates as an unmanned shop managed by students from Himi High School. The students handle product development and sales, offering items such as vegetables grown by the school's agriculture department and apparel dyed with sea urchin shells from local aquaculture projects.
