Unmanned cargo aircraft complete flight demonstrations in Louisiana

Two major aviation developments in Louisiana have demonstrated the growing capabilities of unmanned cargo aircraft.

Robinson Unmanned recently completed demonstration flights of the R44 AIRTRUCK at Acadiana Regional Airport. The remotely piloted cargo helicopter, built on the Robinson R44 airframe and utilizing Rotor Technologies’ RPX system, successfully performed offshore-style missions. These tests included precision positioning, elevated deck landings, and cargo loading/unloading to simulate offshore resupply operations. The aircraft features a 1,000-pound useful load and a cruise speed exceeding 100 knots.

Separately, Elroy Air completed its first autonomous, uncrewed flights under the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). Operating the Chaparral—a hybrid-electric VTOL aircraft with a 500-pound payload capacity—at Houma–Terrebonne Airport, the company demonstrated the potential for commercial, defense, and humanitarian logistics. The flights were conducted under air traffic control oversight to help shape the integration of uncrewed aircraft into the National Airspace System.
